November 1, 2002

It's my birthday. I'm 40.

I'm not having a mid-life crisis, so no need to buy a $50,000 Corvette, or get a face lift.

I'll get a tattoo.

I wanted something fun and upbeat. I'm not into tattoos that are scary, or mean or that have to do with death or ugliness.

And, for the first time, I wanted something that would 'show.' All my other tattoos can be easily covered up with clothing.

Not this one.

After some initial consultation, and searching I hooked up with Brandon Notch, owner and tattoo artist at Sacred Saint Studio in Pasadena, CA.

He designed a big mask.

First step: application of purple transfer

A closer, and somewhat out of focus picture of the transfer.

It's literally thermofax type paper that is used, and a purple line is left on the skin, which the artist traces right over.

And after about 5 hours...

we end up with a pretty awesome looking tattoo

6 weeks later -- we added in color.

It's very colorful, for sure, and gets a lot of comments. While I see it as a celebratory mask, others see it as 'scary' 'creepy' and 'mean.'
